Church Planting

We believe that church planting is one of the most effective ways of reaching people with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our desire is to plant gospel-centered churches throughout Western PA. For this to become a reality, we seek to develop church planters from within our Presbytery, and recruit planters who are called to Pittsburgh and Western PA.

To this end, Pittsburgh Presbytery helped start the Three Rivers Church Planting Network as a way to help support and encourage planters in the PCA and like-minded denominations and networks. We also provide care for our planters’ wives through a partnership with Parakeleo, a ministry developed to care for and train wives.

As a Presbytery we are currently focusing our attention on two planting opportunities. One is a co-planting opportunity with RUF in Indiana, PA. The town of Indiana is about 55 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, and is the home of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) which boasts a student body of nearly 15,000. The greater Indiana area (15 minute drive) has a population of 45,000 (not including students). Our hope would be to have both a church planter and RUF planter on the ground by the fall of 2017.

Another Presbytery opportunity is in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. This is a large geographic area that is comprised of city neighborhoods, ex-urban neighborhoods, old suburban, and new suburban, with a population of nearly a million people. We currently have no PCA Church in this part of the Presbytery, with the closest church about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. There is almost endless possibilities here, and the ideal planter would be one who has an entrepreneurial spirit.
