Church Planting

We believe that church planting is one of the most effective ways of reaching people with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our desire is to plant gospel-centered churches throughout Western PA. For this to become a reality, we seek to develop church planters from within our Presbytery, and recruit planters who are called to Pittsburgh and Western PA.

To this end, Pittsburgh Presbytery helped start the Three Rivers Church Planting Network as a way to help support and encourage planters in the PCA and like-minded denominations and networks. We also provide care for our planters’ wives through a partnership with Parakeleo, a ministry developed to care for and train wives.

As a Presbytery we are currently focusing our attention on three plants and with one opportunity on the horizon. The opportunity we’re working on is a co-planting opportunity with RUF in Indiana, PA. The town of Indiana is about 55 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, and is the home of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) which boasts a student body of nearly 15,000. The greater Indiana area (15 minute drive) has a population of 45,000 (not including students). Our hope would be to have both a church planter and RUF planter on the ground by the fall of 2018.

Current Church Plants of Pittsburgh Presbytery

One of our newest planters Peter Doerfler is in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. This is a large geographic area that is comprised of city neighborhoods, ex-urban neighborhoods, old suburban, and new suburban, with a population of nearly a million people. This will be the only PCA Church in this part of the Presbytery, with the closest church about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Another of our plants is in the post-industrial town of Jeannette, PA which is about 25 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh. Nate Keisel is planting this work. He has lived in the community for six years, and has a lot of connections in the community.

Our third plant, Pilgrim Presbyterian, is in the town of Scottdale, PA and is pastored by Dale White. Scottdale is a small town about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Dale has lived and worked in the community for many years.
